Author Interview – Filipa Fonseca Silva

image

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank for their support? My family, of course. But you can read about it in the acknowledgements page of my books.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you? Selling enough books to quit my job and write fulltime, being invited by magazines to write a column now and then and seeing one of my books turning into a movie.

Tell us about your new book? What’s it about and why did you write it? My new book, The Strange Year of Vanessa M., is about a woman who starts questioning every choice in her life and decides to let everything go in search for happiness. I wrote it because everyday I meet people who are unhappy but afraid to change things in their lives. They are so influenced by society’s expectations that they stop living their dreams. And that’s sad, because we only live once.

If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask? Bono Vox. I admire his music talent and specially his live work trying to make the world a better place.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax? Watching TV specially shows like Modern Family, Greys Anatomy, Californication, American Idol. Or just a good movie.

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going? My fans, which are always asking when does the next book come out. And also my imagination, that can’t be silenced.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel? I hope my books make people feel that it was time well spent. I would also like them to take away the subliminal messages: don’t give up your dreams and don’t let society tell you what to do with your life.

What color represents your personality the most? Pink

What movie do you love to watch? Any Tim Burton movie

How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing? I have mix feelings. Sometimes I hate them because I see lots of people addicted to them – they socialize through these social networks instead of going out and talk to people face to face. But I love Facebook to reach an audience.

If you could do any job in the world what would you do? I would be an actor.

What makes you angry? Injustice and people who think they are better then everyone else.

Vanessa M

When Vanessa got into her car that winter’s afternoon, she had no idea she was setting off on a journey with no return. An inner journey that would call into question a whole life spent living up to other people’s expectations.

With tragic and comic episodes that bring together a domineering mother, a hippie aunt, a boring marriage, an insufferable boss and a friend who never knows when to shut up, “The Strange year of Vanessa M.” shares Vanessa’s voyage of self-discovery with us. And it makes us marvel at the power we have to question things, because there’s no end to the pursuit of happiness.

Author Interview – Dermot Davis

How do you deal with negative reviews?

To be honest, I think the only way to deal with negative reviews is not to read them. At all. Which I have yet to train myself to do as I have read every single review I have received (laughs). I had no idea of the power of a negative review and of how hurtful they can actually feel to the recipient until I received my first one. To the reviewer I’m sure that they’re just being truthful in the moment and sharing with the world that what they just read was a total piece of crap but to the writer of the piece, reading that, it’s like someone just stabbed them with a very sharp knife. I guess we writers are very sensitive creatures at heart and only want people to love our work and rave about our genius but that’s probably not the reality we live in, at present. And certainly not on Goodreads where some of the reviews can be downright savage

What’s your greatest character strength?

As far as writing goes, I would say that one of my main character strengths is discipline. You can be the most terrific writer the world has even seen but if you don’t have the discipline to sit in a chair and write, write, write until you finish the project, then your talents have gone to waste and have not been shared with the world.

What’s your weakest character trait?

Procrastination (smiles). As much as I know that I have to sit in that chair and face the empty page again and again, I still can come up with hundreds of reasons why I shouldn’t and many pressing chores to do rather than write, like check my twitter feed and see what others are up to on Facebook.

Why do you write?

There’s no other feeling quite like it and I’m more “me” when I write than the grumpy and unfulfilled person I become when I don’t.

Have you always enjoyed writing?

Not at all. Sometimes it’s the hardest thing to keep motivated and I have to force myself to continue. That’s usually when I’m stuck in a storyline that I don’t know how to solve or when I’m continuing down the incorrect storyline that doesn’t serve the story’s characters and I’m forcing it. When the story flows and the characters all agree on the direction I’m taking… then it’s bliss.

What motivates you to write?

I’m miserable and impossible to live with if I don’t.

Stormy Weather

This novel explores the role that dreams play in the healing of the body/mind/spirit.

Robert Munro, a therapist specializing in dream interpretation, awoke one morning to find himself in a dream from which he could not awaken. Experiencing first hand the limitations of his own training and theories, he must solve the puzzle of his own dream in order to break free from its bondage. In the process, he’ll better understand himself, other people, and the nature of consciousness itself.

#AmReading - The Ups and Downs of Being Dead @marshacornelius

The Ups and Downs of Being Dead by M.R. Cornelius

Amazon Kindle UK

Print Length: 391 pages

  • Fifty-seven year old Robert Malone is the CEO of a successful clothing store chain and married to a former model. When his doctor tells him he is dying of cancer, he refuses to go quietly. Instead of death, Robert chooses cryonics. He knows it's a long shot. His frozen body will be stored in liquid nitrogen for the next seventy-five years, and then he'll wake up in the future. That is, if technology develops a way to bring him back.
He's willing to take that gamble.
What he doesn't realize is that he won't lie in some dreamless state all that time. His soul is very much awake, just like the others who were frozen before him. And like these souls in limbo, Robert begins a new kind of life outside his physical body.
He discovers that he can ride in the cockpit with the pilots, but he can't turn the page of a magazine. He can sit in the oval office with the president, but he can't prevent a child from dashing in front of a car. He doesn't work, or eat, or sleep. He can't smell, or taste, or touch. These obstacles make it difficult to experience love, and virtually impossible to reconcile with the living.
Over the next several decades, Robert Malone will have plenty of time to figure out The Ups and Downs of Being Dead.

Author Interview – Dana Hui Lim

What motivates you to write? Writing is a chore for me, but I really wanted my story to be told. Most of my countrymen will not have the chance to be heard, so in my small way I wanted to help let others know about what happened to the people of Cambodia.

What are you most proud of in your personal life? Raising my daughter and allowing her to become the person she wants to be. She has graduated with two bachelor degrees and is currently working towards a PhD in Psychology.

What books did you love growing up? I didn’t have any books growing up, and couldn’t have read them if I did. I loved my school books once I had them though, but that was when I was 18 and they were strictly an aid to the education I had been lusting after for so long. It wasn’t until much later that I could read for pleasure, and I never had a chance to develop a taste for fiction.

What book should everybody read at least once? Any book that shakes them up and makes them do something that counts. I don’t like to mention a particular work, for I don’t think I am qualified to comment.

What do you hope your obituary will say about you? They can say what they like, it won’t bother me. You can tell my Buddhist upbringing didn’t take! If I had to read it ahead of time though, I suppose I would like it to say that I knew what I wanted and I strove to get it. Attaining a goal is less important than the trying.

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live? This is certainly true and where I grew up is the main subject of my book. I grew up in Cambodia as it went through its darkest period of history. Pol Pot and his cronies did their best to ensure that it was a miserable time for everyone, and unfortunately they were very good at it. I now live in Canberra (Australia) where it is peaceful and quiet.

What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing? I am new to this, but writing such a personal book was very difficult. I had shut away a lot of memories and had to drag each one out into the light and examine it minutely. The process of writing brought those images to the forefront of my mind, and I shed a lot of tears along the way. I still do even now as I write this.

Jack Canon’s American Destiny by Greg Sandora

Take a Journey for the Greater Good in this intensely gripping, loving thriller. Join Jack Canon and his insanely loyal team of friends and family as they make their all-or-nothing run for the presidency. You’ll laugh out loud and have your heart ripped in two; all while holding your breath, sitting on the edge of your chair. You’ll become emotionally committed as you find yourself standing behind your new courageous – unstoppable heroes – forced to take unimaginable steps to reach their goal. You’ll be shocked at the heart-wrenching cost.

JACK CANON’S AMERICAN DESTINY – TO SOMEDAY HAVE THE POWER, TO DEDICATE THE HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND–TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT. THIS TIME HE’S ALL IN.

Meghan’s Review. this reader captured the essence of the Story of Jack Canon. Both men and woman will enjoy the book.

“‘Jack Canon’s American Destiny’ is one of those intense political thrillers that simply deserve to be made into a movie for full, complete enjoyment. This is especially true right in the wake of the recent Academy Awards and movies like ‘Argo’ and ‘Lincoln’ bringing home the bacon. But on its own, this book is immersive—you can live and breathe in the world of Jack Canon—his full range of concerns, from picayune to grandiose, consists of things that are close to every American’s heart.

Jack Canon is an everyman—you can relate to his positive traits, even his minor character flaws, and mostly you can relate to his will get the presidency. Cleverly written, sprinkled with the right amount of “spice” to keep the level of interest high, ‘American Destiny’ is a tale that grips your heart and squeeze it—Jack Canon’s mission to redistribute wealth and give everybody cheap energy is not exactly acceptable in the eyes (and pockets) of those whose businesses will be affected. And from there, the plot thickens.

Finishing the book, your heart aches because you know Jack Canon isn’t real—he’s an ideal, made magically alive by the sheer talent of Greg Sandora. But that doesn’t mean we cannot aspire. As in the book’s timeline, 2016, maybe the book is telling us to be really, really wise in our choices. Meanwhile, download a copy of this book and sink your teeth in the kind of literary entertainment I’ve never seen since Alex Cross.”

Joanna’s Review. “Jack Canon is an idealist. He’s on the road to fight the good fight and the only road that will allow him to do that is the one leading to the White House. Great plan, but plans don’t always end up going the way we want. This Senior Democratic Senator from Kentucky is a kind, smart, charismatic family man. He is a man of superior intelligence who isn’t afraid to admit to a mistake. He has always been faithful, but he has a very intimate, hands off relationship with Sandy his assistant. Hopefully this won’t derail his campaign…

“Jack Canon’s American Destiny” is a sly ride on a slippery slope. This fast paced thriller is packed with political issues that mirror what we have going on today. If you notice, the villains are a conglomerate of who we have deadly problems with right now, so it echoes what we deal with on the global level at this time.

The author, Greg Sandora, manages to introduce all this well written madness in a way that will keep you glued to this book. Sandora has used well flushed out characters, timely villains, an image of our present president therefore the actions are very relatable to the reader.

Want to have some fun? Want to read something that will have you dangling over the edge of a cliff in that good way that starts your heart pumping and your adrenaline kicking in?”

Diane’s review .“I rarely choose a book about politics, but since becoming addicted to the hit show Scandal, I thought Jack Canon`s American Destiny might be an interesting read. To my amazement, I totally enjoyed this political thriller.

Allow me to congratulate the author on his impressive debut. As a writer, he has a talent that allows an immediate connection with his characters, especially Jack.

The book moves at a relaxing pace. But I must admit, I became extremely absorbed when the author reveals an unexpected twist making it a suspenseful page turner!

I can’t wait to read the highly anticipated sequel.”

Jackie’s review. “Get ready to take a ride. The suspense, the loyalty, the inside world of politics all wrapped into a thriller you will not want to put down. I am recommending this to my book club and any book club who wants a good read for a change.”

Terry’s Review. I have read this book in it’s infancy stage and was amazed. The final product riveting. Ben Affleck, you are the perfect Director, Producer and Actor to be Jack Canon. It is ready for the big screen. Read it now and you will want more of Jack. This book will inspire your next election choice. We need a real life Jack Canon for President. Move over Alex Cross, here comes a new generation hero. This is a story that can take many turns and always keep you waiting for the next chapter. It is written from the heart with passion, but with some hope for all Americans that fiction can be real if you only want it bad enough. So for you politicians out there that want to be the next President, read this book.

The Magistrate (The Prisonworld Trilogy) by Keira Michelle Telford

    clip_image002

    Five years ago …

An explosion shakes the ground and sends a plume of thick black smoke up into the air, a raging ball of fire beneath it. Debris is thrown up and comes crashing back down to earth: bits of stone and brick, chunks of twisted metal, and scraps of human flesh.

The entire western elevation of Hamilton House—an imposing Victorian building located on the Victoria Embankment in the EC4 zone of London, right at the edge of the Square Mile—is destroyed, leaving a gaping, fiery hole from which the screams of the injured echo into the deserted Inner Temple Gardens beside it.

After the blast, and the brief moment of hollow silence following it, the normally tranquil area around Victoria Embankment is flooded with noise.

    Sirens.

    Fire.

    Police.

    Medics.

In the coming hours, the news will report that the Home Secretary is dead, along with several senior Section Five officers. Many more people—other Section Five officers included—were injured, and the first to be dragged from the wreckage by a couple of passing pedestrians is a forty-odd-year-old man. His shoulder-length light brown hair, which is normally pulled back into a neat ponytail, is bedraggled and scruffy. Dressed like a proper gentleman—in other words, a toff—he’s wearing an expensive suit, complete with waistcoat and silk puff tie.

His tweed flat cap falls off, getting trampled on as the two conscientious humanitarians pull him across Inner Temple Gardens and lie him down on the soft green grass away from the fire and the smoke, helping him to breathe.

The Benjamin Chronicles: Relativity by Matthew DiConti (Excerpt)

    CHAPTER TWO

The sound of a blaring horn and squealing tires dragged Conal from his stupor. He heard a car door slam and the shout of nearby voices.

“Hey! What the hell are you doing? Are you all right, man?”

A burly, middle-aged man in a plaid shirt and denim jacket ran toward him.

    “Was there an accident?”

Conal turned to him, still kneeling in the street.

“I-I’m not sure. I thought I saw—I must have hit the tree.”

“Yeah, man, can’t see anything out here. You’re lucky you’re all right. Anyone else in the car with you?”

“No, no just me.” Conal could feel his throat tightening and knew there were tears in his eyes. He was grateful that the rain hid them. “Thanks for stopping. I’m all right. I’ve got it from here.”

“Hey man, you’re bleeding. You shouldn’t be driving like that.”

Conal looked down at his hands. The headlights from the man’s vehicle shining through the rain lit them up, they were smeared with the rainwater and blood. “Shit,” Conal muttered. “I must have hit my head.”

“It’s all right, I’m fine. It’s just a cut, nothing major. I live close by and this truck is a tank, it’ll get me home. Nothing a hot shower and some aspirin won’t fix!”

The man rubbed his brow, looking down at the ground for a second, then he looked around as if to see if anybody was watching. “If you’re sure…I-I can go call for help,” the man shouted. Eager to return to his car, he had backed away from Conal and kept one hand on his door.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m all right. Thanks, though. I appreciate you stopping.”

A sigh of relief passed across the other driver’s rain-spattered face. “Sure. Take care of yourself.”

Conal managed his way back into the driver’s seat and stared at the tree a few feet from his face. A crack ran down the windshield in front of the passenger’s seat and he had already glimpsed the damage to the hood and the fender. He didn’t care about any of it.

Nausea settled in his belly and his head began to swim. He rested his forehead on the steering wheel, closing his eyes and letting blackness slide over his consciousness. He stayed there for a minute.

He had about five seconds before Abby’s horrified face appeared before him again, her body writhing as she struggled futilely to pull herself out of the man’s grip. But this time she wasn’t gone. This time the scene played over and over again.

Conal gasped, shaking himself, coming to. His hands pulled the door handle, shoved the car door open. At some point, he leaned out of the car. His stomach heaved and he vomited on the pavement. He saw it happening, but none of it registered.

    Relativity

Conal Benjamin never let the love of his life Abigail Bradley know of his romantic feelings for her. Years of living with that regret haunted Conals life and left him with an emptiness in his heart. In one serendipitous moment they are reunited at an alumni science exhibit giving Conal a second chance but in a cruel twist of fate Conal’s triggers an unexpected chain of events sending Abby and himself through a wormhole to 1888 Whitechapel, London, the time and place of one of the most horrifying serial killers in history, Jack the Ripper. With the time machine lost and Conal and Abby separated, the fate of both of their lives hang in the balance. Nothing is what it appears to be and it’s up to Conal to unravel the mysteries that await him, before it’s too late.

“I could not put this cleverly crafted paranormal fiction novel down. I can’t wait to go on the next time travel journey with Benjamin! It would make for a great TV Series/Feature Film. Out of 5 stars I give it 6!”   - Kelly V. Dolan, NBC News Radio
