Invisible (The Aerling Series) by DelSheree Gladden @DelSheree #YA #MustRead #BookClub

My best friend is not imaginary. He’s not a ghost, either. And I’m pretty sure he isn’t a hallucination. He’s just Mason.
He is, however, invisible.
Zipping up my jeans as I stumble into my tennis shoes, I shuffle out of my room. By the time I reach the bathroom, I have both feet solidly in my shoes, even if the laces remain untied. One jiggle of the doorknob sets me to growling. Locked. My eyes dash to my sister, Evie’s, door, only to find her making her way down the hall herself. Her hair is sticking up in all sorts of wild ways, so it’s pretty safe to assume she hasn’t seen the inside of the bathroom yet, either.
“Mason?” she asks, stifling a yawn.
“Who else?” I grouch.
Evie giggles. “You know, for someone who’s invisible, he sure does worry a lot about how he looks.”
My little sister was the first person in my family to admit Mason was real. My mom and dad passed off my new friend as typical five-year-old stuff. Mom thought it was cute when I asked for extra snacks to share with Mason. Dad didn’t even hesitate when I asked if Mason could sleep in my room with me. Evie was only three when Mason first showed up, but she took to him right away. She thought it was great fun to watch him move things and make the cat fly. Really, he was just carrying the cat around in his arms, but since Evie can’t see Mason, to her it looked like everything he touched could float.
I’ve always wondered why Mason’s clothes disappear when he puts them on, but the cat never did. He can put something in his pocket and it vanishes, but if he just holds it, it floats. Mason doesn’t know either. I think it must be something he’s doing without realizing, but Mason disagrees. As far as he knows, that’s just how it’s meant to work. Since he’s the invisible one and I’m not, it’s hard to argue with him.
“Mason!” I yell as I pound on the door. “Hurry up!”
I hear a muffled response, that I’m sure was not an apology for hogging the bathroom. I sigh and reach for the key. My fingers brush along the door frame for the simple metal shaft that acts as a rather low-tech key. Finally finding it, I shove the key into the lock and poke around until the door finally opens. Evie stalks in dutifully.
Five seconds later, Mason howls as the shower water turns ice cold. Evie pops her head back out. “Did I get him?” she asks.
Evie can’t hear Mason, either. Nobody but me can, not unless he’s touching them. And even then, they have to have accepted his presence as reality in order to hear him. I don’t know why that works, but it does. I learned a while ago to just accept the bizarreness that comes with Mason.
Laughing, I nod. “Yeah, you got him.”
Invisible
Olivia’s best friend is not imaginary. He’s not a ghost, either. And she’s pretty sure he’s not a hallucination. He’s just Mason.
He is, however, invisible.
When Olivia spotted the crying little boy on her front porch at five years old, she had no idea she was the only one who could see him. Twelve years later when new-girl Robin bumps into the both of them and introduces herself to Mason, they are both stunned.
Mason couldn’t be more pleased that someone else can see him. Olivia, on the other hand, isn’t jumping at the chance to welcome Robin into their circle. Jealousy may have something to do with
that, but honest fear that Robin’s presence will put Mason in danger is soon validated when a strange black car shows up outside Olivia’s house.
The race to find out what Robin knows in time to protect Mason from whatever threats are coming becomes Olivia’s only focus.

Stan Spencer - Five Ways to Make Writing (and Losing Weight) Easier@DrStanSpencer

Got writer’s block? Got a little extra weight? Many good habits benefit the mind as well as the body. Here are five that will help you think more clearly and shed some pounds at the same time.

1. Get more sleep. Most adults need six to eight hours or more of sleep for optimal brain function. Getting enough sleep makes concentration and clear thinking easier. When we don’t get enough sleep we tend to get distracted easily, have a hard time getting motivated, and are more likely to crave junk food. Get to bed early before you get hungry and feel the need to snack, and avoid watching television just before going to bed, as it can make falling asleep more difficult.

2. Exercise at least two or three times a week. Regular exercise benefits the mind and body in many ways. It gives the mind a break and provides oxygen to the brain to facilitate clear thinking. It helps elevate mood and combat depression. And it burns calories, both directly, and over the long term by boosting metabolism. Choose ways of exercising that you can enjoy (or at least not hate), so you’ll be more likely to stick with it. Even better, exercise with a friend.

3. Eat fewer processed foods. Processed foods are foods that have been altered beyond recognition. If you can’t tell what the ingredients are in a food item just by looking at it, it’s processed. In general, processed foods tend to digest quickly, causing a rush and then a dip in blood sugar. Blood sugar is what fuels your brain. To think clearly and creatively, you need a constant supply. Fluctuations in blood sugar can also prompt cravings for fattening snacks. Unprocessed foods such as whole fruits, vegetables, and nuts digest more gradually, allowing blood sugar levels to remain more stable so you can think better and longer without being hampered by cravings or writer’s block. To start out your day, try a yogurt parfait with fruit and granola or chopped nuts, a bowl of cracked wheat cereal or steel-cut oatmeal, or eggs with salsa or avocado. Stock your refrigerator with weight loss foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt, nuts, and whole grains.

4. Take a brisk walk. When you have writer’s block, are getting easily distracted, or feel like your mental wheels are spinning, it’s time to give your brain a break. Not only will a 15-minute brisk walk help clear your mind and reset your thinking, it has also been shown in scientific studies to calm junk food cravings. If you can’t get outside to walk, do a few body-weight exercises inside, or at least get up and walk around the room.

5. Meditate daily. Meditation-based therapy has been used successfully in the treatment of chronic pain, stress, anxiety, and depression. Stress and anxiety not only impair thinking, they can prompt us to turn to food to make ourselves feel better. Meditation can be as simple as closing your eyes and paying attention to your breathing. Try to make it a daily habit. For a meditation session to be most beneficial, it should last at least 12 minutes.

Don’t try to develop all of your healthy mind and body habits at once. Start with one or two of the easiest ones and work on those for two or three weeks. Once you see the rewards, you’ll be motivated to tackle the habits that require more effort.

He lives in southern California and blogs on natural weight loss techniques at fatlossscience.org.

Diet Dropout's Guide to Natural Weight Loss

This book isn’t about the latest celebrity diet, wonder food, or miracle supplement. It’s about creating a personalized weight loss plan—your own easiest path to naturally thin. While you can lose weight with almost any diet, keeping the weight off is much more difficult, requiring permanent changes in eating and exercise habits. This book provides a science-based approach for making those changes in a way that works best for you, without wasting time, money, or effort.

Dr. Spencer explains why we gain weight and why the fat lost by dieting almost always comes back. He then presents an array of practical weight loss tools for controlling emotional eating, calming cravings, boosting metabolism, and improving nutrition and exercise. In the final chapter he has you create a natural weight loss plan based on your unique set of needs, abilities, and preferences. Simple recipes are provided for weight loss foods that reduce cravings and prolong satisfaction.

What this book offers is a solid approach to weight loss—self-directed, gradual, and lasting—in contrast to the quick but fleeting weight loss offered by most one-size-fits-all diet plans.

Author Interview - Stan Spencer @DrStanSpencer

Image of Stan Spencer
How did you come up with the title?
I did an internet survey, got about 30 recommendations, didn’t like any of them, and came up with my own out of nowhere.
Can you tell us about your main character?
My main character is you. You are a good person. You are trying your best but are being held back by lack of practical information. When you are presented with simple, realistic solutions to your challenges, you are able to make real, positive changes in your life.
How did you develop your plot and characters?
I don’t. I give you the information you need in a usable form, and you develop yourself.
Who designed the cover?
Tina MV Campbell, freelancer. She was wonderful.
Who is your publisher?
Fine Life Books.
Why did you choose to write this particular book?
Excess body weight is one of the biggest challenges of our time. When I see a big challenge, I want to help out.
What was the hardest part about writing this book?
The actual writing. I have writer’s block 95% of the time, and not much talent, but a lot of determination. My high school English teacher would tell me there’s no such thing as good writing — only good rewriting. For me, it doesn’t get good until the 4th or 5th rewrite. Part of the problem is I’m a perfectionist. Three cycles of professional editing helped.
Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?
Almost everything in the book is new to me – insights into nutrition, exercise, psychology.
How do you promote this book?
I have promoted it mostly with KDP Select at Amazon.
Will you write others in this same genre?
I will write more self-help books.
How much of the book is realistic?
100%

Holy Ghost Writer's Thoughts on Online #BookMarketing @sultanofsalem #amreading #action

The Right Way and The Wrong Way to Promote Your Book Online
Due to the benefit provided by the Internet, most authors are now more and more accessible to promote their books especially online. In the usual cases, once one begins to work on a certain book, it is highly advisable that one is also able to sign up for a Facebook account or at least be able to update one’s Facebook account or Twitter and Pinterest for that matter.
It is indeed crucial to always consider social networking to one’s advantage. This will then help you to be able to establish an audience niche especially those who have an interest in your book. In this connection, it is equally imperative that authors should be able to set up a fan page which can be incorporated on their social networking accounts. The advantage in this cases is that you no longer have to go through all the trouble of needing to introduce yourself while you might end up creating new books for the future.
As reiterated, Facebook, Twitter and other social networking can be your allies to an effective book promotion. But then, one must have to consider that in promoting your book online, one must be aware of those things that should be avoided. To be in particular, one must not be too spammy when you are promoting your book online. In other words, one should avoid sending spam messages to your fans over Facebook or Twitter. To be more particular, don’t let the message be all about your upcoming book. Instead, make it more engaging and livelier. You may post some related humor or some related information with regard to your upcoming book.
Another way to promote your book online in a good manner is through blogging. One tip is that your book will greatly be interesting if it contains topics that you will include in your blog that they would be very much relatable to. But one of the mistakes most author promoters do is that they would focus heavily on blogging and yet they forget to include their information and some interesting facts about the book in their blog. This will help to attract more readers in buying your book.
Indeed, online promotion is not as easy as everyone thinks it should be. It also takes enough patience so that one may soon reap the fruits of book sales. Always remember that in the end, it is always best to use various internet tools to one’s advantage.
Holy Ghost Writer
The Sovereign Order of Monte Cristo is a continuation of The Count of Monte Cristo (Book I), related through the voice of Sherlock Holmes and The Sultan of Monte Cristo (Book II). It includes exhilarating new adventures, characters, and ideas, carrying the reader past book I and II and into book III of an ever-expanding new series based on the classic.
Those who have already had the pleasure of reading The Sultan of Monte Cristo will certainly appreciate the unique way in which the Holy Ghost Writer has expanded the original story without the help of anyone (except perhaps from the ghosts of Dumas and Doyle).
In addition to comprising a 3rd sequel to The Count of Monte Cristo, The Sovereign Order of Monte Cristo serves as a prequel to The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

Chance Collision (Crossing Forces) by C.A. Szarek @caszarek #Excerpt #Suspense

Pete’s heart dropped to his stomach and he squatted in front of her, taking both her hands in his just as her first tear coursed down her cheek. “Don’t cry. Nikki, it’ll be all right,” he whispered.
Before he realised what he was doing, Pete straightened, pulling her to her feet and into his arms. Fitting her against him was natural—even if only for comfort.
Nikki wrapped her arms around him without hesitation and buried her face against his neck. She sniffled. Her warm breath tickled the skin above the collar of his button-down and a tremor shot down his spine.
He rubbed her back in large circles. Warning bells went off in his head, but he ignored them, even though he was holding her more like a lover than a witness. Close. Inappropriate.
She lifted her head and their gazes locked.
Pete promptly slipped into her wide brown eyes. Liquid mocha.
She swallowed and he wanted to kiss her throat.
His eyes slid to her mouth. Plump. Inviting.
Pete needed to taste her. Right. Now.
He bent his head down.
Nikki’s lips parted, that pink tongue making another appearance. But she didn’t pull away. If anything, she tilted her face up. Moved closer.
Pete’s warning bells blared into full-blown tornado sirens, but when Nikki closed her eyes and brushed her mouth against his, he soundproofed his conscience and took her mouth.
Sweet. Damn, she was sweet. Ripe raspberries or something sugary. More.
Deepening the kiss, he pulled her even closer, aware of the tightening in his jeans and how his cock throbbed as her pelvis rubbed his. He rocked on his heels as Nikki wove her arms around his neck and kissed him harder. Their tongues duelled and danced, both of them pushing and pulling, giving and taking control. Sliding his hands down her back, he followed the curve of her shapely firm bottom, squeezing and kneading.
“Pete, we’re pretty much wrapped up. Neil said you can expect his report—”
Jared’s voice jolted him and Pete tore his mouth off Nikki’s. He met the guy’s dark eyes. The younger detective’s brows were arched as high as they could go. He froze in the doorway, one hand on the frame as if he had to brace himself.
It took all Pete was made of not to shove her away from him. Like they’d been caught doing something wrong.
You kissed her, idiot. Very wrong.
He ignored the voice that piped in with how she’d actually closed the distance between their mouths. Nikki had answered his first move.
Doesn’t matter. Still wrong. She’s a witness. Not to mention a co-worker. Your boss’s assistant.
Nikki slid from his arms and swiped at her damp cheeks. They were tinged pink, her lovely lips kiss-swollen, her loose red locks mussed. She averted her gaze, but she couldn’t seem to look at Jared either.
She’d kissed him. Kissed him. Why hadn’t she pulled away? Had she enjoyed it as much as he had?
Pete ignored his train of thought and cleared his throat. Banished her taste from his mind. Ignored how he could still feel her mouth against his. “Are you all right?” Forcing words out, he grabbed her hand and she glanced back at him. Touching her only made him want to drag her back into his arms and taste her again. Hold her. Then take her home. Keep her with him. For her own safety, of course.
She nodded. “I should go check on Gram.”
“We need to get to the hospital,” Jared said, taking his blue booties off.
“Yeah. We…need to go,” Pete croaked.
Nikki nodded, her teeth sinking into that full bottom lip.
He bit back a groan and jerked his eyes away. Unprofessional loser.
“Did you get everything you needed?” Nikki asked. Her voice was steady. She’d pulled herself together admirably.
Which is more than you can say for yourself. Grow a pair, will ya?
Jared snorted, but Pete disregarded him.
No. “Yes. Take care of your grandma. If you need anything, you call me, okay?” Pete said, clearing his throat.
“I will. Have a good night,” Nikki whispered.
After muttering an appropriate farewell, Pete couldn’t unglue his eyes from her hips swaying gently as she disappeared down the hallway.
Jared punched him in the arm.
Glaring, Pete jumped, but amusement flashed across the other detective’s eyes.
“Did you get everything you needed?” Jared asked, smirking.
At least there was no judgement in the guy’s expression. Damn good thing Jared didn’t have the balls to mention what he’d witnessed. Hell, knowing Jared, he thought they were already screwing.
Pete wasn’t about to confirm or deny.
“Shut up.”

Malpractice! The Novel by William Louis Harvey @sexandlawnovel

The sign on the wall adjacent to the doors of the courtroom read, “Courtroom Six: The Honorable Monica Davies.” He pushed through the door, noting that the seats for observers were almost empty. Since the trial had not started and the jury had not been chosen, this was not surprising. Paul Butler was used to large audiences and had a reputation for courtroom theatrics and occasional trial fireworks.
Then he looked at the plaintiff and defense tables inside the barrier in front of the seats. At his (the plaintiff’s) table sat Stan Murphy, one of his partners, and Cleo Jones, a beautiful and exotic young associate at his law firm. This was to be the first big trial for her. Both Murphy and Jones had smiles of relief on their faces when they saw him enter.
Charles Quick, at the defense table, gave a small, disappointed wave to Paul on seeing that he had beaten the judge to the courtroom. (p. 15) Malpractice! the Novel

Malpractice_Cover_sansback1
Malpractice! the Novel is an electrifying work of realistic fiction written by an anonymous insider who worked the frontlines of the clash between the medical and legal professions during the California medical malpractice insurance crisis, which began in the 1960s. William Louis Harvey, a nom de plume, takes readers on a steamy adventure involving power, sex, lies and money in this candid courtroom suspense thriller. While Malpractice! The Novel, is a work of fiction, it is rooted in the personal experiences and firsthand knowledge the author acquired during his decades of working inside the medical industry. California in the 1960s and first half of the 1970s had already seen a dramatic increase in medical malpractice lawsuits as juries awarded progressively higher sums for “pain and suffering,” a category that had no concrete limits and caused physicians’ insurance premiums for malpractice to skyrocket. Harvey chaired a committee that reviewed all malpractice claims involving a major California hospital during the crisis. Details of some of the cases he experienced are engraved in his memory, and small portions of these tidbits find their way into Malpractice! the Novel, his first novel. Roused by a recent New York Times article about the American male novelist’s fear of addressing sexuality, Harvey interleaved honest sex histories for his novel’s characters, adding a titillating sensuality to the suspenseful novel.

5 Things You Should Know About #Romance #Novel "Dance For A Dead Princess" by Deborah Hawkins

5 Things You Should Know About "Dance For A Dead Princess"

1. Dance for a Dead Princess is the English translation of the French composer Maurice Ravel’s piano solo, Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte. He later made an orchestral version, transcribing its ravishing and haunting melody into an unforgettable French horn solo. In Dance, Nicholas Carey is bitter towards his father, the Seventeenth Duke, because Christopher Carey forced Nicholas to leave his concert pianist mother and come to England at age fourteen after his older half-brother died. Nicholas didn’t want to be a duke. He wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps. Now, haunted by the loss of his beloved mother, his adored wife, and his close friend, Princess Diana, Nicholas sits up late into the night playing the Pavane to ease his heartbreak. Taylor, who doesn’t like Nicholas at the beginning of the book, only begins to soften toward
him as she listens to his music.
2. Dance for A Dead Princess is based upon a historical fact. In January 1997, Princess Diana received a phone call telling her she would be assassinated. She made a video tape naming the person on the call and gave it to a close friend in America for safekeeping. It has never been found.
3. Dance for a Dead Princess is really two complete love stories and two complete mysteries in one book. The stories have important parallels. Thomas Carey, who became the first duke near the end of his life, was the son of a well-to-do and ambitious sheep farmer from the village of Burnham in Kent. He sent his son Thomas to Henry VIII’s court to be trained as a knight. Eventually Thomas and Henry would fall in love with heiress Elizabeth Howell; and Henry would circulate rumors Thomas murdered his wife to be free to seek Elizabeth’s hand. Similarly, Deborah Downing’s death under mysterious circumstances at the Abbey in 1994 and the coroner’s inquest led to gossip Nicholas was responsible. That gossip reaches new heights when his ward Lucy is found dead on a night when Nicholas has no alibi and when Taylor has just discovered
Nicholas cannot sell the Abbey as long as Lucy is alive.
4. Hever Castle, the ancestral home of Anne Boleyn, was the model for Burnham Abbey. Hever is now a bed and breakfast.
5. My favorite scene in the book is the one in which Nicholas comes to Taylor’s hotel to comfort her after her former fiancĂ©, Chris Hunter, invites her to dinner only to tell her he is marrying a younger lawyer at their firm in just a few weeks. Nicholas brings muffins and coffee to a very heart broken and hung-over Taylor and persuades her to spend the day shopping with him and seeing the sights of London. He reminds her, “The women in my life, particularly Diana, had a knack for getting their hearts broken. I’m the steady shoulder to cry on.”
He takes her to Garrads, the famous London crown jewelers, to pick out a gift for his girlfriend, the American actress, Ami Hendria. Ami is furious with Nicholas because he is neglecting her for Taylor. Nicholas tells Taylor that Diana always helped him pick out peace offerings for his girlfriends and shows her the Carey family tiara that Deborah wore on their wedding day. When Taylor refuses to try it on, Nicholas observes she is the only woman in the world who would say no to that offer.

In January 1997, Princess Diana received a phone call telling her she would be assassinated. She recorded the information on a secret video tape, naming her killer and gave it to a trusted friend in America for safekeeping. It has never been found.
Diana's close friend, Nicholas Carey, the 18th Duke of Burnham and second richest man in England, has vowed to find the tape and expose her killer. After years of searching, he discovers Diana gave the tape to British socialite Mari Cuniff, who died in New York under mysterious circumstances. He believes Wall Street attorney Taylor Collins, the executor of Mari's estate, has possession of it. He lures Taylor to England by promising to sell his ancestral home in Kent, Burnham Abbey, to one of her clients, a boarding school for American girls. Nicholas has dated actresses and models since the death of his wife, ten years earlier, and has no interest in falling in love again. But he is immediately and unexpectedly overwhelmed with feelings for Taylor at their first meeting.
Taylor, unaware that Diana's tape is in her long-time friend and client's estate and nursing her hurt over her broken engagement to a fellow attorney in her firm, brands Nicholas supremely spoiled and selfish. She is in a hurry to finish the sale of the Abbey and return to New York. But while working in the Abbey's library, Taylor uncovers the diary of Thomas Carey, a knight at the court of Henry VIII and the first Duke of Burnham.
As she reads Thomas' agonizing struggle to save the love of his life and the mother of his child from being forced to become Henry's mistress, she begins to see Nicholas in a new light as he battles to save his sixteen-year-old ward Lucy, who is desperately unhappy and addicted to cocaine. But just as Taylor's feelings for Nicholas become clear and at the moment she realizes she is in possession of Diana's voice from the grave, she learns that Nicholas may be Lucy's father and responsible for his wife's death at the Abbey at the time of Lucy's birth. When Nicholas is arrested for Lucy's murder and taken to Wandsworth Prison, Taylor sets out to learn the truth about Nicholas, his late wife, and the death of the Princess of Wales.
Dance for A Dead Princess is a the story of two great loves that created and preserved a family that has lasted for five hundred years.
